Meeting Amrita, inhabitant of the Tibetan Majnu-ka-tila neighbourhood

Imaginary, culinary, sensory or cultural journeys… We portray the landscape, the character, the context… it’s up to you to dream and imagine what happens next…

Amrita lives in the Tibetan refugee colony « Majnu-ka-tila », north of Delhi, a stone’s throw from the Yamuna River. Every morning she is seen in the small square in front of the Tibetan monastery near Chikmagalur.

In this district, everything is calm and peaceful, the streets are in the image of their inhabitants; a few thousand Tibetan refugees. Amrita likes to stroll through the sometimes so narrow streets that one wonders at every moment if one is still in the public space. Here no car, no touk-touk, no horn concerts, it’s like a little bubble of Buddhist zenitude in the heart of Delhi. After wandering through the small winding alleys of Majnu-ka-tila, after greeting a few Tibetans she knows well, Amrita meets her friends with whom she shares the latest news, in the small square of the neighbourhood. A true haven of peace in the heart of this bustling city.

Amrita then enters the temple for a few moments to recollect and meditate. For the passing traveller, this is an opportunity to discover Buddhism and its traditions.

The place is soothing and beautifully decorated. Amrita loves this display of colour and feels good inside. On days when she has the time, she can stay here for hours but most of the time she just comes by to say hello to the gods.

When leaving the temple, Amrita never forgets to light a candle on the burners on the right side.

She finally returns to the square and does some shopping with the vegetable sellers who have now finished setting up their carts pulled by bicycles.

On the mobile stalls, the vegetables are fresh and appetizing. In this small Tibetan neighbourhood, the food is always good and spicy. On the turquoise-blue benches all around the square, a few inhabitants rest quietly and watch the passers-by coming and going in the temple and in the surrounding streets that come alive as the hours go by. They all greet Amrita and give her the most beautiful smile. What to start the day with?
